Our little community is really rural and the people in our lives have very limited resources and a different standard of living. Consequently what we do and how we run our business has a direct impact on our staff, their children and everyone that makes this place wonderful – including our surrounding villages and communities. Education is the foundation of this vision of a better life. Let us tell you about our continuous journey and how we are trying to touch the lives of the amazing people around us. We support:

USHONGO SCHOOL
The children of Ushongo village are the future leaders of our communities and the forward thinkers of tomorrow. Annually our maintenance team refurbishes the exterior and interior of the school to maintain and uphold the infrastructure, allowing the children to be able to learn come rain or shine. Ask us about donating building supplies or volunteering to be on the team. All cash donations received from our guests are utilized for purchasing books and stationary. If you have an extra few pencils lying around at home why not throw them in your luggage to donate, every little bit helps.

LOCAL SUPPORT
Here at The Tides we are passionate about creating economical change in Tanzania so we have sourced only the finest Tanzanian craftsmen to partner with. Our interiors have bespoke hand crafted furnishings which are created by disabled artists in Tanzania. Our linen is hand woven from Tanzanian grown cotton by Tanzanians. The coffee we serve you is bean to cup grown and roasted in Tanzania on a generational farm. Let us tell you all about the makers that have touched our lives.

THE PLASTIC STORY
Our surrounding communities live very different lives than our average guests and have issues like sanitation, water and basic necessities at the forefront of their thinking. This unfortunately means that eliminating single use plastic has taken a back seat. We have vowed to change that. We do regular beach clean ups in the village and educate about the effects on the ocean and marine life around us. We have committed to say no to single use plastic and have procured sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. It is a work in progress but every bit helps and our staff have played a vital role in advocating this fight in the village.

WATER AND SANITATION
Rural Tanzania is a far cry from the first world countries that most of our guests hail from. Our whole village only has 2 water closets and it has been our mission to be able to build additional facilities to better the standard of living for our community. There is also no fresh water available in this Coastal village and it is our goal to one day be able to provide fresh drinking water and water for growing crops. A village desalination plant is the eventual dream and would have a monumental impact on the lives of the community. Chat to us about donating building material or sanitation systems.
